Construction output in the Czech Republic declined by 1.5% year-on-year in January 2026, following an upwardly revised 6.9% increase in December 2025. This was the first contraction since October 2024. The downturn was driven by a 2% decrease in building construction output (after a 4% rise in December), while growth in civil engineering slowed sharply to 0.2% from 12.4% previously.

During the month, 4,231 building permits were issued, a 0.7% increase year-on-year, and the floor area of new construction expanded by 27.6%. The number of dwellings started rose by 14% to 2,811, but the number of completed dwellings fell by 22.5% to 2,341, primarily due to a decline in the family houses segment. On a monthly basis, overall construction activity decreased by 0.8% in January.
