Tourist arrivals into Malaysia rose 9.2% year-on-year in December, a report by Tourism Malaysia said Friday. The report said December recorded the highest number of tourist arrivals of 2.058 million, up from 1.886 million in November.
For the year 2008, tourist arrivals grew 5.1% from last year. Tourist arrivals increased to 22.05 million from 20.97 million in the previous year.
Singapore registered the largest number of tourists in 2008 and contributed to 49.9% of the tourist arrivals. This was followed by Indonesia, Thailand and Brunei.
On the basis of the region, arrivals from Europe recorded the highest growth of 21.8% in 2008 compared to last year. This was followed by North America, Eastern Asia, Southern Asia and Oceania.
