Gazprom Chair optimistic about Nord Stream 2 deadline

Gazprom, the jewel in Russia’s crown, has won international fame thanks to its ambitious projects. The Russian energy giant has been recognized as one of the most valuable companies in the world. Among its achievements are timely implementation of the South Stream project, a cut-off of gas to Ukraine, and a launch of a pipeline to China. Gazprom Chairman Alexey Miller pledged that gas supplies would be available through the Nord Stream 2 pipeline in a timely manner. The CEO noted that the project would be completed regardless of the US opposition to it. Remarkably, the Gazprom board intends to meet the deadline despite failure across the board. Nevertheless, executives make optimistic statements. “We are working on plans that were approved from the very beginning. The plan for the start of gas supplies is January 1, 2020,” Mr. Miller said.

There are grounds for optimism. Indeed, some sections of the pipeline are being laid in Finland and Switzerland according to the schedule. Recently Günther Oettinger, the European Commissioner for the Budget, noted that criticism from Donald Trump should not disrupt the building routine. “The project is immune to such attacks,” Günther Oettinger stressed. Interestingly, policymakers at the European Parliament acknowledged the project as being geopolitical and adopted a resolution which advocates for stopping the project implementation. Moreover, Denmark is the only country out of the five participants which has not greenlighted the pipeline through its territory yet. Meanwhile, the US is stepping up pressure on the European proponents. In this context, the future of the project seems to be gloomy. However, the Gazprom leader does not consider such headwinds to be serious. So, more pledges are likely to follow.
