According to European Commissioner for Budget Guenther Oettinger, US President Donald Trump’s criticism of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline is no reason to terminate the project. The pipeline will still be built, and this process cannot be so easily stopped.

EU representatives demanded from Russia a fair deal on the further transit of gas through the existing Ukrainian gas transportation system. The US president has repeatedly stated that the EU is heavily dependent on Russian gas, and he also offered to buy American LNG.

In December 2018, the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline was laid in the waters of Finland. At the end of December, the pipeline system stretched from the Russian coast along the Baltic Sea bed to the German shore and reached Sweden's exclusive economic zone.

The pipeline consists of two strings with an annual capacity of 55 billion cubic meters. A new gas pipeline of similar capacity is being built near the operating Nord Stream. It will run through the territorial waters and the Exclusive Economic Zones of Russia, Finland, Sweden, Denmark, and Germany. International consultations on the project were carried out with four countries: Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, and Poland. The pipeline's route near Denmark remains unclear since the authorities of this country have not authorized the construction yet.
