Romania's economy expanded at a faster pace in the first quarter of the year, after slowing in the previous three monthly, preliminary data from the National Institute of Statistics showed on Wednesday.

Gross domestic product grew a seasonally adjusted 1.3 percent sequentially in the first quarter, following a 1 percent increase in the previous three months. In the third quarter of 2018, the economy expanded 1.5 percent. On a year-on-year basis, GDP rose a seasonally adjusted 5.1 percent after a 4 percent expansion in the previous quarter. The pace of expansion was the fastest since the fourth quarter of 2017, when growth was 6.7 percent. Non-adjusted GDP grew 5 percent year-on-year following a 4.1 percent increase in the previous month. Economists had expected the growth rate to remain unchanged.
