South Korea's unemployment rate decreased marginally in May, figures from Statistics Korea showed on Wednesday.

The seasonally adjusted jobless rate fell to 4.0 percent in May from 4.1 percent in April. Economists had expected the rate to remain at 4.1 percent. In the same period last year, the unemployment rate was 4 percent.

In May, unemployment decreased to 1.145 million from 1.245 million in April.

The non-adjusted unemployment rate fell in May, to 4.0 percent from 4.4 percent a month ago.

The number of employed persons rose by 259,000 from last year to 27.322 million in May.
