Taiwan's exports and imports rose in June after falling in the previous month, figures from the Finance Ministry showed on Monday.

Exports rose 0.5 percent year-on-year in June, after a 4.8 percent fall in May. Economists had expected a 4.4 percent decline.

Imports rose 6.6 percent annually in June, reversing a 5.9 percent decline in the preceding month. Economists had expected a 1.5 percent rise.

Trade surplus fell 26.1 percent from a year ago to US$3.87 billion in June. Economists had expected a surplus of US$4.52 billion.

Among the leading export components, parts of electronic products, information, communication and audio-video equipment increased.

Exports of base metals and articles of base metal, machinery, plastics and rubber, and articles declined.

Imports of parts of electronic product and machinery grew, while those of mineral products, chemicals, base metals and articles of base metal declined.

Exports to the U.S.A increased in June, while those to mainland China and Hong Kong, ASEAN, Japan and Europe dropped.

In the January to June period, exports fell 3.4 percent from a year ago and imports rose 0.1 percent.
