India's consumer price inflation slowed in March, data from the National Statistical Office showed Monday.

Consumer price inflation eased to 5.91 percent from 6.58 percent in February. However, in the same period last year, consumer prices rose only 2.86 percent.

Likewise, food price inflation slowed to 8.76 percent from 10.81 percent a month ago. Food prices advanced 0.3 percent in March 2019.

On a monthly basis, consumer prices fell 0.27 percent and food prices were down 1.27 percent in March.

The Reserve Bank of India forecast inflation to ease to 4.8 percent in the June quarter.
