This increase comes as markets resumed operations following a bank holiday, mirroring the upward trend in US bonds. In the United States, bond market sentiment took a hit due to former President Trump's announcement of his intention to remove Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook amid allegations of misconduct, sparking concerns regarding the Federal Reserve's independence.
Domestically, Bank of England (BoE) policymaker Catherine Mann expressed that the current monetary policy is "not tight enough," highlighting the persistent issue of inflation. She advocated for maintaining interest rates for an extended period but was open to supporting larger rate cuts should the risk of economic downturn rises. Mann, who stood against rate cuts in both May and August, emphasized the importance of sustaining the benchmark rate at higher levels. The increase in yields places additional pressure on Chancellor Rachel Reeves as she prepares for the upcoming autumn budget. Higher borrowing costs complicate adherence to fiscal rules and exacerbate the challenge of managing debt servicing. Concurrently, UK 30-year bond yields have risen close to their peak levels not seen since 1998.
