European equities finished solidly higher on Wednesday, as robust corporate earnings helped offset mounting macroeconomic concerns. The Euro STOXX 50 advanced 0.5% to 6,319, while the STOXX Europe 600 climbed 0.6% to 647.
Santander rose 1.7% after reporting a 17% year-on-year increase in underlying profit, supported by an expanded client base following its acquisition of UK lender TSB. The sector broadly benefited from the upbeat tone, with BBVA gaining 2%, Intesa Sanpaolo up 1.3%, and UniCredit adding 0.7% ahead of its results due tomorrow.
Airbus jumped 7% after raising its delivery guidance and announcing a €5 billion share buyback programme.
In fixed income, sovereign bond yields hovered near recent highs as natural gas prices continued to surge. The ECB is widely expected to leave interest rates unchanged at its meeting tomorrow; however, persistent inflation risks may prompt the Governing Council to strike a more hawkish tone on the outlook.
