Austria’s annual inflation rate accelerated to 3.6% in September 2026, up from 3.2% in August, according to preliminary estimates. This was the highest rate since May and was driven entirely by rising fuel and heating oil costs. Energy prices surged 14.5% year-on-year, compared with a 9.9% increase in August.
Services remained the largest contributor to overall inflation, although services inflation eased slightly to 4.2% from 4.4%. Price growth for food, tobacco, and alcohol picked up, with inflation in this category rising to 1.0% from 0.3%. Prices of industrial goods were up 0.7% year-on-year.
Core inflation, which excludes energy and food, edged up to 3.0%. On a monthly basis, consumer prices rose 0.2% in September, slowing from a 0.6% increase in the previous month, which had been the strongest monthly gain in six months.
