Taiwan's industrial production declined for the first time in nine months in April, confounding economists' expectations for a further increase, preliminary figures from the Ministry of Economic Affairs revealed Tuesday.
Industrial production fell 0.6 percent year-over-year in April, reversing a 3.7 percent rise in March. Meanwhile, economists had expected a 4.0 percent climb for the month.
Among sectors, mining and quarrying output contracted 3.0 percent annually in April, while manufacturing production growth eased sharply to 0.8 percent from 5.2 percent.
On a monthly basis, industrial production slid a seasonally adjusted 2.5 percent in April, in contrast to a 0.3 percent rise in March.
