The monetary base in Japan was up 5.9 percent on year in September, the Bank of Japan said on Tuesday - coming in at 498.821 trillion yen.

That follows the 6.9 increase in August.

Banknotes in circulation added 4.0 percent on year, while coins in circulation gained 1.0 percent. Current account balances climbed an annual 6.5 percent, including a 5.2 percent gain in reserve balances.

The adjusted monetary base was up 0.2 percent to 497.185 trillion yen.

For the third quarter of 2018, the monetary base was up 6.6 percent on year.
