South Africa's consumer price inflation rose in May after slowing in the previous month, data from Statistics South Africa showed on Wednesday.
The consumer price index rose 4.5 percent year-on-year in May, after a 4.4 percent increase in April. Economists had expected inflation to remain unchanged.
The main contribution to the annual inflation came from food and non-alcoholic beverages, housing and utilities, transport and miscellaneous goods and services.
Excluding food and non-alcoholic beverages, fuels and energy, inflation was 4.1 percent.
On a month-on-month basis, consumer prices rose 0.3 percent in May.
