Hong Kong's trade deficit widened in June,as both exports and imports fell, data from the Census and Statistics Department showed on Thursday.

The trade deficit rose to HK$55.2 billion in June from HK$34.7 billion in the same month last year. Economists had expected a deficit of HK$49.1 billion.

In May, trade deficit was HK$34.7 billion.

Exports decreased 9.0 percent annually in June. Economists had expected a 2.3 percent fall.

Imports declined 7.5 percent in June, while economists had expected a 3.0 percent fall.

On a monthly basis, exports and imports dropped 9.8 percent and 3.4 percent, respectively.

From the April to June period, trade deficit rose to HK$125.5 billion from HK$143.7 billion in the same period last year. Exports and imports fell 4.7 percent and 5.7 percent, respectively.
