Norway's unemployment rate increased in August, the labor force survey from Statistics Norway showed Thursday.

The unemployment rate came in at seasonally adjusted 4 percent in August versus 3.8 percent in May. The rate matched economists' expectations. The rate for August indicates average for July to September period and May reflects April to June period.

The statistical office said the number of people registered as unemployed or on government employment initiatives with the Labour and Welfare Administration was unchanged from May.

At the same time, the number of employed persons increased by 17,000 in August from May.
