China has submitted a request to the World Trade Organization seeking dispute consultations regarding Canadian surtaxes and quotas applied to steel and aluminum, as announced by the trade organization on Wednesday. The measures in question include tariff-rate quotas on steel imports from countries without free trade agreements with Canada, such as China, as well as a surtax on products containing steel or aluminum originating from China. Last month, Prime Minister Mark Carney declared that Canada would implement 25% tariffs on steel imports using Chinese steel by the end of July to safeguard the domestic industry. Trade Ministry spokesman Huzaif Qaisar justified the decision, stating, "We will not hesitate to take action when our industries face threats from unfair practices." He further explained that the measures are aimed at addressing "China's overcapacity and non-market behavior, which are undermining Canada’s steel sector and threatening Canadian jobs."
