In August 2025, Fiji experienced a significant year-on-year decrease in consumer prices, recording a 2.1% decline. This follows a 0.4% reduction in the previous month, marking the third straight month of deflation. Notably, this represents the steepest annual decline since April 2021. The most substantial drop was seen in food prices, which declined by 6.9%, the sharpest fall recorded since data collection began in 2004, compared to a 2.9% drop in July. Transport costs also fell sharply, decreasing by 6.6%, the most significant eight-month change, compared to a 3.3% decrease previously. Additional declines were observed in housing (-0.8% compared to -1.1%), clothing and footwear (-4.0% compared to -2.6%), recreation and culture (-0.8% compared to -0.7%), and furnishings, household equipment, and routine maintenance (-0.5% compared to 0.8%). Conversely, prices increased for alcoholic beverages and tobacco, seeing a rise of 6.9% compared to 5.1%, education (steady at 0.5%), and miscellaneous goods and services (9.3% compared to 8.9%). On a monthly scale, consumer prices saw a 1.4% reduction in August, marking the most significant monthly fall since March 2021, following a 0.5% decline in July.
