Average weekly earnings for Canadian non-farm payroll employees rose 3.8% year-on-year to C$1,346 in April 2026, up from a 3.5% increase in March and representing the fastest pace of growth since April 2025. The largest gains were recorded in utilities (11.2%), information and cultural industries (10.1%), finance and insurance (8.2%), retail trade (7.2%), and professional, scientific and technical services (6.7%). In contrast, earnings fell in real estate and rental and leasing (-3.9%).
By province, the strongest increases were observed in Nunavut (8.1%), New Brunswick (6.7%), Manitoba (6.2%), and Nova Scotia (5.9%). On a month-over-month basis, average weekly earnings rose 1.0%. Meanwhile, average weekly hours worked were largely unchanged at 33.5 hours, both compared with the previous month and with a year earlier.
