The Baltic Exchange’s dry bulk freight index, which reflects rates for vessels transporting dry bulk commodities, climbed for a third consecutive session on Wednesday, gaining 3.4% to 2,680 points—its highest level since October 13. Ongoing strength in the larger vessel segment remained the primary driver of the increase.
The capesize index, covering ships that typically carry 150,000-ton cargoes such as iron ore and coal, rose for a third straight day, jumping 7.7% to 3,793 points. The supramax index inched up 0.1% to 1,870 points. In contrast, the panamax index, which usually tracks vessels hauling 60,000 to 70,000 tons of coal or grain, declined 1.9% to 2,204 points.
