South Africa's consumer price inflation accelerated at a slower-than-expected pace in August, after easing in the previous two months, figures from Statistics South Africa showed Wednesday.
The consumer price index climbed 4.8 percent year-over-year in August, faster than the 4.6 percent rise in July. The inflation was expected to increase to 4.9 percent.
Prices of food and non-alcoholic beverages grew 5.7 percent annually in August and transport costs rose by 3.9 percent.
On a monthly basis, consumer prices edged up 0.1 percent in August, just below the 0.2 percent rise economists had forecast.
