India's wholesale price inflation accelerated more-than-expected in September, preliminary data from the Ministry of Commerce and Industry showed on Monday.

The wholesale price index rose 5.13 percent year-on-year after a 4.53 percent increase in August. Economists had forecast 5.03 percent inflation.

On a month-on-month basis, the wholesale prices grew 0.7 percent in September.

Primary articles group registered 0.2 percent price growth, though food prices dropped 0.2 percent. Non-food prices also decreased 0.2 percent.

Prices of minerals grew 9.7 percent and those of crude petroleum and natural gas grew 1.1 percent.

Manufactured products prices grew 0.6 percent.

Inflation based on the WPI Food Index, which includes 'Food Articles' from Primary Articles group and 'Food Product' from Manufactured Products group increased from -2.25 percent in August to 0.14 percent in September, the agency said.

The build up inflation rate in the financial year so far was 3.87 percent versus 1.50 percent in the corresponding period of the previous year.

Preliminary data released on Friday showed that the consumer price inflation accelerates slightly in September to 3.77 percent from 3.69 percent in August.
