India's wholesale prices rose at a faster-than-expected rate in January, data from the Ministry of Commerce & Industry showed on Friday.

The wholesale price index rose 3.1 percent year-on-year in January, following a 2.59 percent increase in December. Economists had expected a 2.92 percent rise.

Build up inflation in the financial year was 2.50 percent in January compared to 2.49 percent in the corresponding period of the previous year.

Food price inflation accelerated to 11.51 percent in January from 13.24 percent in December. Prices for non-food articles rose 7.05 percent.

Fuel and power prices grew 3.42 percent after a 1.46 percent slump, and prices of manufactured products rose 0.34 percent.

On a monthly basis, the wholesale prices edged up 0.1 percent in January.
