On Monday and Tuesday, UK Secretary of Commerce Elizabeth Truss and US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer are set to meet in Washington to discuss the progress of the US-UK free trade agreement and relationship.
Since Brexit in January, the United Kingdom has been trying to resolve issues of independent trade, opening up many trade routes through negotiations with different countries, one of which is with the United States, which it considers a priority.
"Initially, since Brexit, the plan for trade negotiations between our countries was not concretized, but nevertheless, we were able to achieve positive results, even through online negotiations during the global quarantine," Truss said.
However, the latest FT report reveals that the UK government no longer believes that a free trade agreement with the US will be possible, especially ahead of the US presidential election, as officials blamed the pandemic for slow progress, which is not progressing much .. ...
In addition, during his visit to London, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said that the UK and the US will have a difficult road ahead with regards to the joint movement to create prosperous trade.
Nevertheless, a third round of negotiation is already scheduled for late August, in which according to Pompeo, "the point of the negotiation is that we need to make good progress on the issues and close it as quickly as possible."
