UK construction output fell 1.0% year-on-year in February 2026, easing from a revised 1.9% decline in January but coming in weaker than market expectations for a 0.5% drop. This was the fourth consecutive annual contraction in the sector. New work continued to drag on performance, decreasing for the fifth straight month (-4.8% vs -6.0% in January), while repair and maintenance activity strengthened (4.5% vs 4.0%).
On a month-on-month basis, construction output rose 1.0%, picking up from a 0.5% increase in January and marking a second consecutive monthly gain. The improvement was broad-based, with both new work (1.0%) and repair and maintenance (0.9%) expanding.
Looking at the three months to February, total construction output declined 2.0%. New work fell 3.4%, whereas repair and maintenance was flat, showing no overall growth over the period.
