Italy’s trade deficit with European Union partners narrowed in February 2026, signaling an improvement in the country’s external position within the bloc. According to the latest data updated on 17 April 2026, the Italian Trade Balance with the EU improved to a deficit of €0.65 billion, compared with a larger shortfall of €1.14 billion recorded in January 2026.
While the balance remains in negative territory, the reduced gap suggests a relative strengthening in Italy’s trade dynamics with EU counterparts — either through firmer export performance, softer import demand, or a combination of both. Market participants will be watching upcoming releases to determine whether February’s move marks the beginning of a trend toward a more balanced trade position or a temporary adjustment following January’s wider deficit.
