Botswana’s annual inflation rate jumped to 10.3% in April 2026, up sharply from 4.2% in March, reaching its highest level since December 2022. The surge was primarily driven by transport costs, which soared 28.5% (compared with 6.4% in March), reflecting substantial increases in retail fuel prices and public transport fares.
Inflation also picked up for alcoholic beverages and tobacco (10.3% vs. 9.9%), as well as for miscellaneous goods and services (10.3% vs. 9.4%). In contrast, prices continued to fall in some categories, notably housing and utilities (-1.7% vs. -2.4%) and communication (-1.1% vs. -1.2%).
On a monthly basis, consumer prices rose by 6.7% in April, the steepest increase on record, accelerating from a 0.4% gain in the previous month.
