Retail sales in Denmark rose 3.8% year-on-year in May 2026, accelerating from an upwardly revised 1.4% increase in April and rebounding from a ten-month low. Sales recovered in supermarkets, department stores, and specialized grocery stores, which grew 3.2% after a 2.2% decline in April. Growth also strengthened for household equipment, furniture, and building materials (5.1% vs 2.4% in April), as well as for cultural and leisure products (18.1% vs 17.4%).
By contrast, trade in liquid fuels and at filling stations continued to contract, with sales falling 17.8% after a 14.7% drop in the previous month. Growth also softened in several other categories: consumer electronics (5.7% vs 15.1%), clothing, footwear, and jewelry (6.4% vs 10.6%), pharmacies and personal care products (3.3% vs 4.2%), and second-hand goods (13.2% vs 14.2%).
On a monthly basis, retail sales rose 1.0% in May, reversing a 1.8% decline recorded in April.
