Kevin Warsh tried to buy time by holding interest rates steady, but markets immediately sent him the bill.

The Fed left policy unchanged, but unanimity was absent at the meeting. Three of twelve officials voted to raise rates, a clear signal that hawkish concern about inflation is rising within the Committee. At his post?meeting press conference, Warsh argued that tighter financial conditions in the bond market have already done part of the Fed's job and that higher yields provide some "comfort." Investors heard that as reluctance to act swiftly and forcefully.

Treasury yield dynamics

The market's reaction was telling. Long-dated Treasury yields jumped, while short-dated yields fell — a pattern that reflects scepticism over whether the Fed can tame inflation if it continues to dawdle. The widening spread between nominal Treasuries and inflation-linked TIPS confirms those concerns.

Renaissance Macro Research reckons that Warsh merely bought a temporary reprieve: either economic data will vindicate him, or a rate hike will arrive as soon as September. Three dissenting votes today may presage a deeper split tomorrow.

Geopolitics, meanwhile, re-entered the frame. A sudden rocket strike by Iran dashed hopes for a rapid agreement to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, and US President Donald Trump vowed a hard military response. Rising energy prices on that backdrop only amplify inflationary risks.

Stock market dynamics

The stock market responded painfully. The Nasdaq 100 closed in correction territory, dragging other indices lower. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index plunged by more than 5%, marking its fifth consecutive down day. The S&P 500 declined, with eight of 11 sectors finishing in the red.

Meta Platforms added to the pain: adjusted EPS came in at $6.18 versus Wall Street's $7.19 forecast, and the shares plunged by nearly 5% in after-hours trade. Concerns about the ROI on massive tech AI investments gained fresh confirmation.

All year long, asset prices were driven by the AI narrative, with policy taking a back seat. The combination of geopolitics, inflation, and disappointing data has put monetary policy back at centre stage. The open question is whether investors will remember that lesson — or whether AI euphoria will again lead them to ignore warning signs.

Technically, the daily chart shows that the S&P 500 has returned to June's local lows. A confirmed break below those levels would increase the risk of a deeper correction. Short positions established at 7,375 look sensible to scale up in that scenario. Initial downside targets are 7,170 and 7,025.
