Japan's Ministry of Finance on Monday announced that the country recorded a 1,086.9 billion yen merchandise trade deficit in January.
The result missed market expectations for a 625.9 billion yen deficit following the 640.4 billion yen deficit in December.
Exports in the month rose 1.3 percent on year, lower than the 5.0 percent forecast, and down from the previous month's 5.4 percent.
Imports jumped an annual 8.5% versus expectations for 4.8% after contracting 2.6% a month earlier.
