Germany's total number of overnight stays increased in the first half of the year compared to the same period of the previous year, a report by the Federal Statistical Office showed on Tuesday.

The number of overnights in accommodation establishments with nine or more beds and in tourist campsites in Germany increased by 3% to 166.8 million in the first half of 2010 compared to the corresponding period of the previous year.

During the period, the number of overnight stays made by domestic tourists increased 2% to 141.2 million, while overnight stays by non-domestic tourists grew 9% to 25.6 million.

For the first half of the year, the number of overnight stays in the hotel business increased 4% to 101.8 million and for the prevention and rehabilitation clinics grew 2% to 22.3 million. The number of overnight stays in cities with 100,000 or more inhabitants increased in the first Half of the year compared to the first Half of 2009, the Destatis said.

In June, the total number of overnight stays increased 5% to 37.5 million. Overnight stays by domestic tourists increased 3% to 32 million, while overnight stays by foreign tourists grew 16% to 5.5%.
