2025.09.1523:10:53UTC+00India Passenger Car Sales Fall 9% in August

In August 2025, passenger vehicle sales in India experienced a 9.0% decline compared to the same month the previous year, with total sales reaching 280,839 units, as reported by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM). This downturn marks a reversal from a 1.5% increase seen in the preceding month. Notably, these statistics do not include sales figures from BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), and Volvo. The drop in sales is largely attributed to adjustments in dispatch strategies by passenger vehicle manufacturers, explained Rajesh Menon, Director General of SIAM. He noted, "The historic decision by the Government of India to reduce the Goods and Services Tax (GST) on vehicles is poised to significantly enhance mobility accessibility and inject renewed vigor into the Indian automotive industry during the forthcoming festive season." On a month-to-month comparison, sales fell by 6.8%, contrasting with a 9.2% increase recorded in July.
