U.S. manufacturing production edged down in March, underscoring lingering softness in the industrial sector after a brief uptick at the start of the year. According to the latest data updated on 16 April 2026, manufacturing output fell 0.1% month-over-month in March 2026.
The decline follows a 0.2% month-over-month increase recorded in February 2026, indicating that the sector has lost some momentum on a short-term basis. The figures are based on a month-over-month comparison, where March’s performance is measured against February, and February’s gain was measured against January.
The shift from a modest expansion in February to a slight contraction in March suggests manufacturers are facing a more cautious demand environment, with production levels retreating after only a brief improvement in early 2026.
