Wall Street has endured war, inflation, and trillion-dollar AI bets for a long time, but last week hinted that investor patience is not infinite. The Nasdaq 100 is on track to finish July down about 7%, and the SOX down roughly 17%, which would be the worst monthly results for those indices since March 2025 and June 2022, respectively. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite are falling in sync for a second consecutive week for the first time since US and Israeli strikes on Iran began.

There are plenty of reasons to be nervous — and most are not new. Oil briefly topped $100/bbl amid renewed Middle East escalation, Treasury yields spiked to January 2025 highs, and US President Donald Trump revived tariff rhetoric, unveiling levies on 60 economies and threatening sanctions on the EU over a roughly $1bn fine for Alphabet. In short, the market reacted more strongly than before to familiar fears.

The week's main intrigue, however, is not geopolitics but Big Tech. Firms that account for more than a third of S&P 500 market cap are set to report this week, and the Fed meeting coincides with Microsoft and Meta results, followed by Amazon and Apple. Baker Boyer Bank warns investors should now demand real returns from AI capex, otherwise lofty valuations will be questioned.

The debt load of hyperscalers is unnerving the market in its own right. CreditSights reports major AI investors placed over $200bn of new capital this year and announced a further $115bn in follow-on issuance. Debt sales by Nvidia and Amazon worth about $25bn pushed credit prices lower, and Alphabet shares have fallen by about 15% since announcing an $80bn capital raise. That pulled the Magnificent Seven into their largest collective market-cap drawdown since the 2025 tariff shock.

Still, the S&P 500 is trading within about 3% of its record highs, and companies are reporting solid profits. Bank of America is more cautious: risk premia are at a 20-year low, and the market is pricing in a "everything goes right" scenario. BofA's base case calls for a correction of 7–8%, and in the event of disappointment on AI investments, losses could echo the more-than-25% sell-off in South Korea's KOSPI.

BofA's preferred defence is rotation into undervalued quality names — staples and healthcare. The Fed is not a one-actor show, but it will be the decisive arbiter. The remaining question is who will crack first — the bond market, tech investors, or President Trump's own patience. The return of TACO may actually be a reason for buyers to be optimistic.

Technically, the daily S&P 500 chart shows that a pin bar with a long upper wick formed, signaling bull weakness. A break below 7,395 would be a trigger to scale into short positions. Conversely, a decisive move above the pin-bar high at 7,460 would be a signal to return to long positions.
