An index measuring consumer confidence in the United Kingdom spiked in May, a monthly survey from Nationwide revealed on Wednesday, posting the largest jump in almost six years.

The Nationwide survey came in with a score of 55 - well above forecasts for a score of 45 following the upwardly revised post of 44 in April. The original reading was 43.

Analysts cite the general enthusiasm from the royal wedding for the surge in sentiment - the largest for the survey since November 2005.

Among the individual components, the spending index jumped 16 points to a score of 79, while the present situation index rose from 20 to 23.
