U.S. stocks dropped after lawmakers decided to delay a vote on a healthcare bill seen as a proxy of President Donald Trump's mandate. Failure to pass the American Health Care Act will cast skepticism on Trump's capability to deliver his agenda that requires the cooperation of the Republican-dominated Congress.

The Dow Jones industrial average declined 0.02 percent at 20,656.58, as UnitedHealth led losses while Nike was the best performer. The S&P 500 fell 0.11 percent at 2,345.96, as health cared led seven sectors down while real estate outperformed. The Nasdaq composite dropped 0.07 percent at 5,817.69.

The S&P 500's energy index retreated 0.36 percent. Google-parent Alphabet slipped 1.19 percent as more companies pull out YouTube ads on concerns that it may appear along the side of offensive videos. The stock added the most pressure on the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq. Ford Motor shares declined after the firm's first-quarter guidance appeared to be lower than Wall Street estimates. Shares of retailer Five Below jumped 10.80 percent after its quarterly earnings exceeded estimates.
