Asian markets traded lower as investors were surprised by comments from U.S. President Donald Trump on a current free trade pact with South Korea regarding a payment for a sophisticated anti-missile system.
Japan's Nikkei 225 retreated 0.29 percent to 19,196.74. Australia's benchmark ASX 200 index rose 0.04 percent at 5,924.1.
Nintendo advanced 2.11 percent after the firm said it was expecting a 121 percent jump in operating profit for the new fiscal year. Shares of the Japanese gaming giant traded at 28,045 yen per stock.
South Korea's Kospi index was in positive territory earlier in the session however, it fell on news that Trump is threatening to terminate a trade agreement with Seoul. The Kospi lost 0.18 percent at 2,205.44.
Shares of Korean carmakers moved following the news, with Hyundai Motors shares falling 2.04 percent. Korean retailers were also affected, as Lotte Himart dropped 2.83 percent while E-mart slipped 2.13 percent.
China's Shanghai Composite rose 0.08 percent to 3,154.5663 while the Shenzhen Composite climbed 0.362 percent at 1,906.9151. Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index was 0.45 percent lower in mid-afternoon trade.
