Asian equities mostly declined after fluctuating for most of the day as news of a bombing at a concert venue in Manchester added pressure on investor sentiment.

Japan's Nikkei 225 dropped 0.33 percent at 19,613.28. Australia's ASX 200 lost 0.19 percent to 5,760.2.

Mainland China markets were also in negative territory, as the Shanghai Composite fell 0.45 percent to 3,061.7242 while the Shenzhen Composite tumbled 2.12 percent to end at 1,789.4676. Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index pared earlier gains to trade 0.08 percent lower at 2,5412.73.

Bucking the trend was South Korea's Kospi index which rose 0.33 percent to 2,311.74.

Among shares active in corporate news, HNA Group is in talks for a stake in Hong Kong-listed Value Partners Group, an asset management firm, according to reports from Bloomberg. Value Partners shares fell 4.84 percent.

Cathay Pacific denied a report from the South China Morning Post claiming that the airline would trim 200 more jobs than the initial 600 it said it would cut. Shares of Cathay slipped 1.21 percent in afternoon trade.
