2017.06.2922:01:00UTC+00U.S. to Sell Arms to Taiwan Under Trump Administration

The United States plans to sell nearly $1.42 billion in arms to Taiwan, a sale under the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump and is also a move that is expected to anger China.

U.S. State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said the administration has told Congress of the seven proposed sales on Thursday. The package includes technical support for early warning radar, high speed anti-radiation missiles, torpedoes and missile components, according to the State Department.

The sale, which requires congressional approval, is a first to Taiwan under Trump and also the first since a $1.83 billion sale that former President Barack Obama announced in December 2015.

Taiwan's defense ministry said the sale will improve its air and sea combat capability and early warning defenses.

The ministry said Taiwan and the U.S. will continue to consolidate their security partnership in order to contribute to stability in the region.

However, China's ambassador to Washington said the sale will undermine bilateral relation and is in conflict with the spirit of the Florida summit between President Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping.
