Italy's consumer prices decreased at a faster-than-expected pace in June, figures from the statistical office Istat showed Thursday.

The consumer price index dropped 0.4 percent year-over-year in June, just above economists' expectations for a 0.3 percent decline.

It was the fifth consecutive monthly decrease. In May, prices had also fallen 0.3 percent.

Excluding energy and unprocessed food, core inflation was 0.5 percent in June, down from 0.6 percent in May.

On a monthly basis, consumer prices edged up 0.1 percent June, slower than the 0.2 percent expected increase.

The EU measure of inflation, or HICP, slid at a stable pace of 0.3 percent yearly in May, exceeding economists' forecast for a 0.2 percent drop.

Month-on-month, the harmonized consumer prices rose 0.1 percent in May. It was expected to climb by 0.2 percent.
