The majority of the Labour Party’s members of the Parliament (MPs) who voted against Jeremy Corbyn in the no-confidence vote have rallied behind one single candidate Owen Smith in their bid to oust current leader Jeremy Corbyn. As the MPs accuse Mr. Corbyn of not doing enough to help the “Remain” camp win, the challenger Mr. Smith has announced that he will be working and fighting for a second referendum after the negotiations with Brussels are done with.
On the other hand, incumbent Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said that the government and his party must respect the decision of the people, who by majority voted in favor of exiting from the Union. With his stance, the Labour election is likely to be portrayed by his opponents as “Remain” vs. “Exit”.
It is widely expected that Mr. Corbyn will win again and with a big margin, however, it is not clear how the divided Labour Party may be united under the umbrella of his leadership. But if he fails to win, despite the fact that most of the polls are giving him double-digit leads, it could be seen as a verdict to call a second referendum.
