The Brazilian Finance Minister, Henrique Meirelles, signaled that he would only start thinking about running for the country's Presidency in 2018, the year of the election.

On Wednesday, one of the Social Democratic Party (PSD) leaders in Congress said that the political group wants Meirelles to be a candidate in the presidential election of 2018. The minister said afterward that he is not a pre-candidate for the Brazilian Presidency and that he is "focused on the government's work to put Brazil on the path of sustained growth."

Meirelles said that PSD did not formally invite him to run for president and added that he is not worried about a decision he could make next year.

"What happened was a demonstration of the representatives who were at lunch that this should be considered. As I said, I was honored with the compliment. This is a result of the work we are doing in the economy," the minister said.

"I'm not worried about a decision I'm going to make next year. I'm focused on the work in the Ministry of Finance. As I said, everything in due time," he added.
