2017.09.2113:47:00UTC+00MEXICO: Quake Death Toll Rises To 230

The 7.1 magnitude earthquake that shook Mexico on Tuesday has killed at least 230 people, according to the latest update provided by the local Civil Protection Agency. Rescue efforts remain focused on Enrique R?bsamen primary school, in Mexico City, where more than 30 children were killed. Rescuers estimate that at least five children remain alive under the rubble of the collapsed building

"The priority is still to save lives and provide medical care to those who need it. So far, more than 50 people have been rescued from the debris of collapsed buildings in Mexico City," said the Mexican President, Enrique Pe?a Nieto, in a televised message broadcast Wednesday night.

Pe?a Nieto also reported that the affected services had been almost fully restored. The Federal Electricity Commission has restored electricity to 95% of the nearly five million affected users. The International Airport of Mexico City already operates normally.

The quake epicenter was located at 12 kilometers southeast of Axochiapan, in Morelos state, at a depth of 57 kilometers. The tremor hit Mexico's capital only a few days after an 8.1 magnitude quake has left 96 people dead in the country's Southern region. Tuesday's quake also occurred exactly 32 years after a powerful tremor in Mexico City has killed around 10,000 people.
