Japan's consumer confidence improved unexpectedly in October to the highest level in just over four years, survey data from the Cabinet Office revealed Thursday.
The consumer confidence index climbed to 44.5 in October from 43.9 in September. Meanwhile, it was forecast to drop to 43.6.
Moreover, the latest score was the highest since September 2013, when it was 45.4.
The indicator for livelihood rose to 43.5 in October from 42.5 in the preceding month. Similarly, the income growth index increased from 41.8 to 42.5.
The gauge measuring employment advanced to 48.7 from 47.8 and willingness to buy durable goods edged up to 43.6 from 43.5.
The survey was conducted among 8,400 households on October 15.
