South Africa's inflation slowed to the lowest level since early 2015, Statistics South Africa said Wednesday.

Inflation weakened to 4.4 percent in January, in line with expectations, from 4.7 percent in December. This was the lowest since March 2015, when the rate was 4 percent.

Consumer prices for goods grew 3.7 percent after rising 4.1 percent a month ago. Likewise, the CPI for services advanced 5.1 percent following December's 5.3 percent rise.

On a monthly basis, consumer prices climbed 0.3 percent, as expected, in January.
