Colombian elected President Ivan Duque will travel to Washington in what should be his first foreign trip since winning the June 17 elections.

His agenda in the United States should begin on Thursday in Washington, but his press office gave no details of the meetings he might hold nor said how many days he should stay in the United States.

On Monday, U.S. President Donald Trump called Duque to congratulate him on his election victory and to talk about the "security challenges" his government should face.

White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders told a news conference that in that talk "President Trump stressed the strong alliance between both countries and discussed the security challenges facing the new Colombian government."

Before winning the presidential election, Duque expressed his interest to open his international agenda visiting the United States and Spain. Duque lived almost ten years in the U.S., where he worked as a consultant for the Latin American Development Bank (CAF) and advisor to the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).

Duque is expected to be sworn in as Colombian President on August 7.
