Overall nationwide consumer prices in Japan were up 1.3 percent on year in August, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications said on Friday.
That exceeded expectations for 1.1 percent and was up from 0.9 percent in July.
Core consumer prices, which exclude food costs, climbed 0.9 percent on year - beating forecasts for 0.4 percent and up from 0.3 percent in the previous month.
On a seasonally adjusted monthly basis, overall inflation was up 0.5 percent and core CPI added 0.3 percent.
