South Africa's wholesale sales fell to the weakest level in three months in March, data from Statistics South Africa showed on Thursday.

Wholesale trade sales dropped 2.5 percent year-on-year in March, after a 0.6 percent rise in February.

The latest decline was the worst since December, when it was 5.4 percent.

On a month-on-month basis, wholesale trade sales climbed 1.5 percent in March, after a 2.0 percent rise in the previous month.

In the three months ended March, wholesale trade sales fell a seasonally adjusted 1.3 percent in March compared with the previous three months.

At current prices, wholesale trade sales climbed 4.2 percent annually and by 1.0 percent monthly in March.
