South Africa's manufacturing output grew at the slowest pace in three months in May, preliminary data from Statistics South Africa showed on Thursday.

Manufacturing output climbed a non-adjusted 1.0 percent year-on-year in May, after a 4.3 percent rise in April. Economists had expected a 1.3 percent rise.

The latest growth in output was the slowest since February, when it was 0.4 percent.

The biggest positive contribution came from the food and beverages division. While, wood and wood products, paper, publishing and printing divisions made the biggest negative contributions.

On a month-on-month basis, manufacturing output declined a seasonally adjusted 1.5 percent in May, after a 2.5 percent rise in the previous month.
