South Korea's consumer price inflation rose for the third month in a row in January, figures from Statistics Korea showed on Tuesday.

The consumer price index gained 1.5 percent year-on-year in January, following a 0.7 percent increase in December. The expected rate was 1.1 percent.

Excluding food and energy, core consumer prices increased 0.8 percent in January, following a 0.6 percent rise in the preceding month.

On a monthly basis, consumer prices rose 0.6 percent in January after a 0.2 percent increase in the previous month.

The core CPI increased 0.4 percent monthly in January, following a 0.1 percent rise in the prior month.
